Become a Level 1 Official

Becoming an Official within ARA is competitive, approximately 1-2 new Officials are brought on each year. This is directly proportional to the amount of games that would  be available for Level 1 Officials. In Alberta, Officials must be 14 years of age or older. 

Each year, you must express your intent to Officiate. Applications for Level 1 Officials open July 12, 2024. Applications close mid August.

ARA Application Process:

  1. Submit form to Director of Officials.
  2. The Director of Officials will contact each applicant once the application window has closed.
  3. Interview and selection process will then begin, this could take several weeks. Not all applicants will be considered for interviews.
  4. Successful applicants will be notified and are required to complete further requirements by RAB which will be provided once selected.
  5. Must complete Level 1 officiating clinic, which are typically hosted in September/October.

Required Equipment

  1. Black CSA approved Helmet (visor optional)
  2. Black pants
  3. Whistle (with finger grip, not necklace)
  4. Officials Jersey
  5. Skates

Optional Equipment

  1. Girdle
  2. Elbow Pads
  3. Shin Pads

Initial Investment, including level 1 clinic and equipment ~$300-$500.
